How Your Photographer Hangs Portraits in Their Home

Last year, my fiancé David and I were remodeling our home. When we moved back in, I wanted to be very purposeful about what I hung on our bare and newly painted walls.

Being a photographer, I decided that we needed a wall gallery that captured the spirit of our family AND the style of our home.

Since we were coming together with multiple children from past marriages, we knew a few things right out the gate:

  1. David and I are a bridge between our two families; one our children can always rely on

  2. I wanted a special spot for my collection of shots of me with my sons

  3. We DID NOT want to look like brother and sister

Now these specific needs sparked a number of ideas, and I LOVE the one we went with:

This photo of our family, that I took at Kincaid Park, fits us perfectly. We are an outdoorsy group that likes natural light and looks in our home, so the open-air bridge adds to our established environment rather than distracts from it.

We were also very purposeful in how we set ourselves up on the scene. This gallery set was designed for this particular wall in this specific room that we are always in or walking through. We see it often, and want to feel nothing but appreciation and comfort when we do – not annoyance or confusion at how we were placed and posed.

So we split the space we had on the bridge into three parts: one for his two boys and their dog, one for David and I, and one for my two boys and their dog. No matter how we look at it, this gallery absolutely says family. And it absolutely represents our family.

Also, I got my gallery with my guys!

These photos hang right outside my bedroom door; I pass them each morning and evening. Now that my sons are off to college, these images give me such peace and connectedness. Seeing this progression of my boys growing up, from when I towered over them to now when they tower over me, helps me feel closer to them. Like no matter where we are in the world, we’re always together.
